Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan, is a realistic book, publicized on 2000. This novel is based on a true story, it is based on the life of the grandmother’s author. The main character is a thirteen year old girl, called Esperanza and the antagonist is the force of property, because Esperanza was a rich girl in Mexico, Aguascalientes, but when her father is killed by bandits and her uncle Luis burned her house, she moves to U.S.A, California with her mother and also with Hortensia, Alfonso and their son called Miguel, they used to be their servants; at U.S.A, Esperanza and her mom are poor and need to work. The main problem of the story is when Esperanza loses everything and needs to start over being poor, and the big ideas are: violence, for example when Luis burned Esperanza´s house and also when some people in California made a strike for better working conditions.; another big idea is death, when Esperanza´s father is killed and another is that money is not everything; finally the last big idea is the antagonist of the story, property because in Mexico Esperanza is rich, but in U.S.A she is poor. All the life changes for Esperanza, she needs to adapt to her new life, far from the things that she used to know, and she learns to do many things, but even though all the problems she faced, she never give up.
Esperanza Rising is very interesting, is one of my favorite books, because knowing that is based on a true story gave me a lesson about life, it made me understand that all the situations that Esperanza faced are not far from the reality and that those problems can happen to anybody. The story is narrated in third person omniscient and I like that because it is not limited to just some characters feelings and thoughts, you can know what all characters think and feel. In my opinion, the author of this wonderful novel writes very clear, so is easy to understand the story. I recommend this book for teenage girls, because they can learn a very important lesson about live, and also they can learn why it is important to keep hoping, as I did.
