Big ideas:
1. Stealing: -The orphans and poor people of the story steal food to survive -"someone is changing me ' stop! Thief' I run. People. Shoulders. Shoes 'stop! thief'" (page 1)
2. Identification: -the only form of identification the main protagonist named Stopthief has is a yellow stone hanging around his neck, so orphans figure it out that he was a Gypsy. -"'who are you?' I didn't understand the question. 'I'm Uri' he said. 'what's your name?' I gave him my name. 'Stopthief.'" (Page 3) -"'Are you a Jew?' Said the boy in my face. 'I don't know' I said." (Page 6) -"'you're a Gypsy, ain't you?' It sounded familiar. I had learn that word before, around me, in a room, near a wagon. I nodded" (page 8) -In chapter 7, Uri gives a name to Stopthief, he named him Misha Pilsudski and he was very happy to finally have an name. -"'Misha Pilsudski ...' I kept saying. 'Misha Pilsudski... Misha Pilduski...' And then it was no longer enough to stare at myself and repeat my name to myself. I need to tell someone else."(Page 31)
3. Disorder: -The setting of the story is Warsaw, Poland in 1939 during the World War II, and this city has been attacked by Nazis, so the city is in a complete disorder. -Now Misha Pilsudki steals because he cans, now he only needs to enter to store and take what he wants without paying, because of the disorder in Warsaw. So Uri advice him to only steal what is necsesary. -The city is bombarded by nazis. -"'Why can't we go out?' I said. 'They are dropping bombs' he said (page 16)
